Woman ‘hit and bit’ retail workers when they tried to stop her from stealing

A woman hit and bit retail employees when they tried to stop her from stealing.

The court heard that Ashleigh Kane, 27, stole seven items on more than one occasion in June and that she was abusive and threatening to staff.

In two incidents, Kane allegedly attacked, beat and bit employees, including an off-duty police officer who came to the aid of a store employee.

Kane, of Ambleside Road, Lancaster, was sentenced to eight months in prison by a district judge at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (August 22).

She was also given a two-year criminal injunction prohibiting her from entering retail stores in downtown Lancaster, restraining her from insulting retail employees and assaulting retail employees.

Shaun Foster, Community Beat Manager for Lancaster Town Centre, said: “As part of Operation Vulture, we take a zero-tolerance approach to those in our community who steal from our local businesses, particularly those who are abusive and violent towards our retail staff who are just trying to do their jobs.

“We will always try to take positive action and bring them to justice. It is good to see that on this occasion the courts have agreed to make a court order to target Kane’s conduct in the long term.”
