“It is the most twisted form of patriarchy”

New Delhi:

Street 2 is currently a box office hit. The film stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles. Apart from the original cast of the film, the sequel also introduced a new villain to the franchise – Sarkata. In an interview with PTI, writer Niren Bhatt revealed how all these fantastical characters in Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy universe say something about the society. He said, “Some people complain that there is a lot of humour but less horror or vice versa, but these are not horror films where real ghosts haunt people. All our ghosts are mirages of our society. Sarkata is the most twisted form of patriarchy. Stree is the symbol of matriarchy, she is not a witch. Bhediya is the protector of the forests. We have designed these characters in a certain way. We are not talking about hocus pocus or ghosts out of the blue.”

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Niren Bhatt shared how the idea of Sarkata as a character came about. He said, “The destroyed idols in the cave where they cut off Stree’s choti in the first film have their backstory in wall paintings which say that she had a lover when she was a sex worker. The lover was shown headless. Whether the head was cut off because it was a destroyed idol or whether someone had cut it off is not even mentioned in the first film. But after watching it, we thought we could make him a monster with his head missing.”

He added, “But he cannot be Stree’s lover because he was killed. Why would he go against Stree and pose a danger to others? Then I got the idea that he must be the person who killed Stree and her lover and is responsible for her becoming Stree. So he became the symbol of patriarchy.”

While Street revolved around a female ghost who suffered injustice during her mortal existence. The sequel revolves around Sarkata, a headless villain who has a connection to the title character. The original cast of Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurana returns for Amar Kaushik’s direction. Street 2.
