Carlos Alcaraz sprained his ankle during training and gave a comprehensive fitness update ahead of his opening match at the 2024 US Open.
Ahead of his opening match at the 2024 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz suffered an injury scare as he had to abandon a training session on Saturday after spraining his right ankle. The Spaniard assured his fans that he is fine and will take part in the competition.
The 2022 US Open champion said: “I think it’s OK. I just stopped my training as a precaution. I didn’t feel well enough to continue training, just in case things got worse.”
“I don’t want to stop training. I want to train, I want to improve, I want to prepare for the tournament. I’m sure I’ll be at 100% tomorrow or in two days,” he added.
Alcaraz will face Australian Li Tu in his first round match on Tuesday and has lost some of his form. He played just one hard-court match beforehand, losing to Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. His frustration was palpable as he smashed and destroyed his racket on court, later apologizing for the move on social media.
He also lost to Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, having to settle for silver. “It was a difficult moment for me. But in front of me I had a really good player who was fighting for the same thing as me. And he deserved it. Days after the Olympics, I realized I had won the silver medal. It was a great achievement for me that I can be proud of. I will try to move on and learn from this match. … I will approach the next important matches of my career differently or better than I did at the Olympics,” he said.
