Golfers show why fans love moving day at Albertsons Boise Open

BOISE, Idaho — Trey Winstead made a birdie on the 16th hole and tossed his golf ball to a little girl named Avery in the crowd. She caught the ball with a big grin, and that kind of interaction really shows what the Albertsons Boise Open is all about.

“It was very surprising, I got a golf ball thrown to me and I was able to catch it,” Avery said.

Good catch, Avery!

This came after Winstead nearly holed an eagle from about 50 yards out. The crowd gasped as he hit the ball, then applauded as Winstead holed it for birdie.

“It was an incredible shot and she is absolutely thrilled,” said Renee Antone, who was there with her daughter Avery.

This is not the only moment of this kind. Steve Severn has been attending the Albertsons Boise Open since 1982. He witnessed something similar happening on hole 16.

“I saw two different players come off the green and bring their golf game to the next level,” Severn said. “They gave golf balls to all the kids on the sidelines, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Steve Severn watches the action on June 18.

The Boise Open is also an important tournament for those aspiring golfers trying to get their PGA Tour card. This tournament is the first of four final tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour. At the end of the season, the top 30 players will receive their PGA Tour card.

“It’s amazing that these guys are trying to get to the next level and I love watching them,” Severn said. “They’re so good.”

Saturday is known as move day in golf tournaments, when players try to put themselves in a position to compete for the title on Sunday. Winstead shot a 67 to finish at 10 under par, but the current leader is 18 under par.

It is also interesting to note that Scottie Scheffler participated in this tournament in 2019. Scottie has won two Masters and is currently ranked number one in the world.

The event continues on Sunday when a champion will be crowned. It is also Junior’s Day, when children under 15 get in free. Military personnel, veterans and first responders can also get a free ticket on Sunday.
