One Summerville football team was only able to play one half in Week 0, while another team’s fans probably wished their team could have left after two quarters.

Many teams opened their 2024 football seasons on August 23. Summerville began in Stratford, but the game was called off after it was reported that shots may have been fired in the area. Summerville led 28-14 just before the third quarter kicked off when the stadium announcer ordered everyone to evacuate the stadium. There are no plans to finish the game.

Berkeley Independent reporter Matt Bice reported that Goose Creek police said the department “received a 911 call that multiple shots had been fired during the football game. … Officers were on scene and evacuated the stadium. No shots were fired … and no one was injured.”

The play started with an onside kick by Stratford, but Summerville linebacker Jaylen Pryor pounced on the ball.

The Green Wave and Knights defenses held firm on their first appearance on the field. Stratford defender Trenton Fordham intercepted a Summerville pass, ending the Wave’s first possession. Then Summerville defender Jacquez Walker broke up a pass attempt, forcing the Knights to punt on their first possession.

At this point the teams began to exchange points.

Summerville was first on the board, capping a 58-yard drive with a 29-yard pass from Jaden Cummings to Jaiden Kelly-Murray. Bennett Kelley then sent his first of four successful PAT kicks through the goal posts. Summerville running back Keshon Washington managed a 3-yard run on 4th-and-2 to help keep the drive alive.

Stratford responded with an 83-yard touchdown run, which was also maintained with a 4th and short conversion. Quarterback Jachin Davis capped the run with a 4-yard touchdown run. Then Jessie Stament sank his first of two successful PAT kicks.

Summerville next went on a 68-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Jayvyn Williams. Stratford’s response was a two-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 75-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Freddie Alston, tying the game at 14-14.

The rest of the half belonged to the Green Wave. Senior receiver Carson Guinn returned the ensuing kickoff over the halfway line, setting up a 49-yard touchdown drive that was capped off with a 40-yard pass from Cummings to Kelly-Murray.

After Summerville’s defense forced a turnover, the Wave used the remaining time of the first half with a 70-yard touchdown drive, capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Cummings to Washington.

Cummings completed six passes for over 140 yards and three touchdowns and had several big gain runs. Kelly-Murray finished with over 75 passing yards and 25 rushing yards. Williams and Washington did most of the running for Summerville.

Ashley Ridge Hill

Ashley Ridge led at halftime and took a 20-12 lead in the third quarter of its season opener, but the momentum then shifted to Berkeley, which outscored AR 29-6 the rest of the way to secure a 41-26 home victory.

Berkeley sophomore quarterback Henry Rivers delivered an outstanding performance, throwing three touchdown passes for a total of more than 100 yards and running for more than 125 yards.

Ashley Ridge scored on their first two possessions of the game, converting four times on fourth down to keep the offense going. Quarterback Trevor Kalisz capped the first possession with a seven-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Bam Deweese for an early 7-0 lead. Kalisz added a six-yard run in the second quarter for a 13-6 lead and had another touchdown pass in the second half.
