The FBI has now less than a week to meet House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer’s strict deadline to produce documents related to Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s “longstanding ties” to China and its government, as he described it.

On August 17, the committee officially requested all possible documents related to the ongoing investigation. focused on “any Chinese company or individual with whom Mr. Walz may have collaborated or partnered.”

Neither Comer nor the committee nor the FBI have commented publicly on whether any documents were turned over. When asked, Comer said that recent reports have shown that Minnesota Governor Walz “regarding his ties to the People’s Republic of China” and that this made him vulnerable to being influenced “to the advantage of the communist regime and to the detriment of the Americans”.

One example is that Walz, as a teacher, organized a trip to China in the early 1990s, the costs of which were “covered by the Chinese government.” “In 1994, Mr. Walz founded a private company called ‘Educational Travel Adventures, Inc.’, which coordinated annual student trips to the People’s Republic of China until 2003 and was managed by Mr. Walz himself,” said Comer. and added that this bond was lifted four years later after Walz became a congressional official.

He also claimed that Walz had traveled to China about “30 times.” that during his time in Congress he served as a fellow at Macau Polytechnic University and that in 2019 he chaired the 27th National Congress of the US-China Peoples Friendship Association in Minnesota.

Comer further stated that the committee he chairs was briefed on the matter by the FBI on April 22 and July 17, before Walz was announced as Kamala Harris’s vice presidential candidate.

“Despite bipartisan efforts to identify and defeat the CCP’s all-out war against America, Governor Walz continues his problematic relationships with companies and individuals involved,” Comer wrote.

The letter concludes by noting that Walz described himself as someone who “does not fall into the category that China necessarily needs a hostile relationship” and said he “welcomes the achievements of the Chinese people and recognizes that some in the Chinese government are committed to greater rule of law,” although he knows about and condemns human rights abuses in communist China.
