Summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. And with the new season comes new hair trends. For 2024, however, I’m particularly interested in what short hair trends are going to be big in fall. Along with the feeling of going back to school and refreshing your wardrobe, fall is a great time to switch up your hairstyle, whether it’s with a new haircut or hair color. And our love for shorter hairstyles shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it’s a major fall hair trend. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of bob hairstyle trends. From the blunt bob to the swoopy Italian bob, and from the bell bottom bob to the hydro bob, we’ve found plenty of bob hairstyle inspiration at the hair salon.
So which short hair trends will be the big hit this fall? To find out, I asked Thomas SmithHairstylist and international artist in residence at Billi Currie Salon And, Barber Sam BurnettOwner of Hare & Bone Salon, to present the next hot trends for short hairstyles this fall.
Short hair trends for fall 2024
1. Laser cut bob
The laser-cut bob is a surefire haircut that will give you a neat look this fall, says Blacksmithand explains that this haircut is “a perfectly measured, sharp and precise bob of uniform length that sits between the top shoulder and the angle of the jaw” that “works best with a center part and can be combined with bangs if desired.”
“The length can be adjusted to many Face shapes but for a softer result, choose chin length or longer, or for a bolder alternative, go beyond the chin,” says Blacksmith. “Best styled straight or with minimal texture, this is a great option for those with fine hair as the cut makes the hair appear thicker and denser. It’s also very easy to achieve for those with naturally straight or fine hair,” he says.
Even Lily Collins has been opting for a razor-sharp blunt bob lately. Below are the best hair styling products to keep the style looking sharp.

2. Hidden Bob
Another short hair trend we will see in the fall is the tucked bob, says Blacksmith. But what is it? “A bob haircut that is either one length or slightly layered and pinned behind one or both ears. This works for all lengths and styles of bobs and can be achieved by simply tucking one or both sides behind the ears,” he says. “This can have an androgynous or businesslike energy and is great for making a narrow or long face appear wider or helping to make the appearance of finer hair appear thicker.”
“This works best on hair that has a little product in it, like freshly washed or
Fluffy hair can be difficult to secure behind the ear,” says Blacksmith. “Before blow-drying, use a volumizing spray or mousse to give the style extra hold, and fix the hair around the ear with a strong hold hairspray. For a more stable result, use a small barrette or clip behind the ear to hold the hair in place.”
This look pairs perfectly with the hydro bob (also known as the wet look bob) if you want an elegant look for the evening.

3. Clavicut Bob
Accordingly Blacksmithwe all like a little more length this year when considering a short hairstyle. “While bob lengths are growing back up to chin and jaw length in the form of fall’s trendy tucked bobs and laser cut bobs, there is a notable lack of trendy styles shorter than chin length at the moment,” he says. “That may change in winter, but right now there is so much emphasis on hair health that many people are choosing to wear their hair a little longer and are able to do so thanks to the improved quality of their hair.” For this reason, we are currently seeing a comeback of the collarbone-length bob haircut.
“The collarbone bob, also known as lob (long bob) or even R-lob (very long bob), grazes the collarbone, hence the name,” says Burnett“It’s best suited for someone who wants a more statement style but still wants the option to tie their hair back in a ponytail.” So if you want a short hairstyle that you can still tie back for the gym, this cut is the way to go.
“If you have finer hair or want to make a statement, opt for a blunt, one-piece cut,” says Burnett. “If you want to soften the style by allowing natural movement, or if your hair is thick, ask for a few long layers to loosen it up,” he says.
