Hundreds of visitors at air show

HARTSVILLESC Hundreds of people lined the tarmac and fields surrounding the runways at Hartsville Regional Airport on Saturday to enjoy the sights and sounds of the second annual Wings over Hartsville Fly-in/Air Show and Car Show.

“What a beautiful day,” said Senator Gerald Malloy, after whom the airport’s recently renovated terminal is named. “It’s incredible to see so many people here visiting this beautiful airport.”

Malloy helped secure the $1.7 million in state funds for the renovations. He said Saturday that state and federal funds have been secured to extend the airport’s 5,000-foot runway.

With bright sunshine and an autumn breeze, visitors were able to view dozens of light aircraft, from Cessnas to Pipers. The youngsters had the opportunity to climb into the pilot’s seat of an aircraft and imagine themselves soaring through the sky.

The air show included a jet demonstration, a precision landing competition, a flour bomb competition and a demonstration by the Gooney Birds RC Club of Florence.

In the flour bomb competition, visitors who had registered for the competition flew on the plane as passengers and dropped 2.3 kg bags of flour from a height of several hundred meters in the hope of getting as close to the target as possible.

In addition to the air show presented by RiseAero, the Eastern SC Mustang Club sponsored a car, truck and motorcycle show. The show attracted 60 participants of numerous makes and models. 50 trophies were awarded in 25 classes as well as a Sponsor’s Choice Award.

Numerous food trucks provided refreshments.
