The Texas A&M-Texas rivalry will return in 2024 with or without a trophy

When the Texas A&M Aggies face the Texas Longhorns in the final game of the regular season, it will be a rematch of the Lone Star Showdown.

The only problem is that the schools have not yet decided whether to award a trophy to the winner of the game.

Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts said there are discussions about the trophy, but nothing has been decided yet.

“There’s been some discussion about things like that, but I don’t know the specifics. Those are some of the details that still need to be worked out as we go through this,” Alberts said. “That would be fun. I just got a trophy from NACDA the other day recognizing our sixth place finish in the Director’s Cup. People are proud of that and have been working toward that, so we’ll see where that goes.

“In the state of Texas, this game is really important to a lot of people. It divides a lot of people, but that’s what makes it a college sport.

Alberts, who played college football at Nebraska, is no stranger to rivalry games. He has played in many of them and knows the prize is worth more than the bragging rights.

“I’ll tell you, I’ve played a lot of football games, the rivalry games are just different. It’s a privilege and an honor to play in rivalry games like this,” Alberts said. “I’ve said it and I believe Texas-Texas A&M – give us a little time – is going to be the biggest rivalry game in college football. It offers that opportunity, that passion and we’re excited about it.”
