Her brother’s death was devastating to her. She said it “destroyed my mother. It completely changed our lives. We didn’t know what had happened, why he had been killed.”

Vergara said that after watching the documentary, Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami In 2006, she learned of Blanco’s connections between Colombia and Miami.

“There are some real similarities between Griselda and Sofía, and not only their birthplace, but also their path: the unlikely rise of a single mother “I show up in America and say, ‘All right, here I am,'” the series’ showrunner Ed Newman told Variety. “Once you get into it, you realize how fateful it all is.”

Where does Sofia Vergara come from?

According to her IMDb profile, Vergara, 52, was born and raised in the bustling city of Barranquilla, Colombia. Her mother, Margarita Vergara Dávila, is a housewife, while her father, Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, works in the meat industry. According to the same biography, she attended private school and then studied dentistry until she was discovered by a photographer on a beach and began her modeling and acting career.

Vergara is one of six siblings. Although they are very private, Vergara told the Daily Mail how hard Rafael’s death affected her other brother. “My other brother, who was very close to him, became an alcoholic and then a crack addict because of the trauma,” she said.

What happened to Sofía Vergara’s brother Rafael?

According to Metro, Vergara’s brother Rafael was murdered on the streets of Bogota in 1996 when he was just 28 years old.

“We come from a successful family and he knew he was a target for kidnapping,” Vergara told the Daily Mail. “He always had bodyguards. Then one day he went out alone and was shot (in an attempted kidnapping). I was devastated.”

In the same interview, she explained that “unfortunately, the tentacles of drug trafficking in Colombia were everywhere at the time” and that “everything was affected by it.” She added: “My brother was a nice guy – a good guy. But he made a wrong decision and unfortunately he had to pay for it. We all paid for it.”

She moved to the USA with her family

After her brother’s death, Vergara decided to move to the States with her family – her mother, sister and younger brother – to live with her, according to Variety. “It was hard because I had to take responsibility for my whole family,” she told the publication.

She once called Perez Hilton because he reported on her brother’s death

As early as 2013, it was reported that her brother’s case had been reopened by the authorities – but the actress retorted sharply.

“This is nothing new. This is disrespectful,” she posted on X at the time and linked to the gossip site Perez Hilton’s article about the alleged investigation. “We already know everything we need to know about my brother’s death.”

It seems Hilton has learned his lesson, as he has since deleted the post and responded to Vergara’s tweet at the time: “@SofiaVergara, I’m sorry you found this disrespectful. It was written with compassion and not intended as an insult. Really.”
