Investigative journalist David Hundeyin has exposed attempts to tarnish the reputation of the Dangote refinery. In a series of posts on X, Hundeyin recounted how the international non-governmental organization Dialogue Earth (formerly China Dialogue Trust) offered him 800,000 naira (about $500) to write a negative article about the refinery under the guise of raising environmental issues.

Hundeyin, who was still considering whether to make the offer public, decided to expose the offer, which he described as an attempt by external actors to undermine Nigeria’s progress and perpetuate energy poverty in the region. He stressed the importance of public awareness and integrity in journalism, noting that such bribes are a tactic to maintain the status quo on energy problems despite Africa’s considerable resources.

The journalist’s revelations have sparked discussions about journalism ethics and foreign influence in Africa’s energy sector.

Hundeyin stressed that while he does not expect government intervention, his goal is to inform the public about these covert attempts to influence and obstruct national interests.
