Washington Commanders erect statue in honor of Sean Taylor, stadium monument removed

Washington Commanders erect statue in honor of Sean Taylor, stadium monument removed

Washington commanders continue to forge their way to right the wrongs of previous decision-makers, announcing another correction on Saturday that is sure to win widespread approval.

In November 2022, the Commanders retired the No. 21 jersey that safety Sean Taylor wore during his time with the franchise until his untimely death in 2007. They also unveiled a memorial installation that failed in its goal, fueled even more resentment toward the organization, and was widely criticized.

On Saturday, it was announced that the team had removed the installation and was in the process of erecting a statue to honor the Washington legend, with the help of Taylor’s daughter Jackie, who issued a statement about the project.

“I am pleased to join the Washington Commanders in announcing plans to unveil a statue in honor of my father,” Taylor said in the post. “I am grateful to (managing partner) Josh Harris and the Commanders family for their continued commitment to keeping my father’s legacy alive.”

Jackie was just 18 months old when her father was taken, but she learned who he was through family and friends, including Taylor’s teammates, who helped ensure his memory is honored and properly preserved.

Fans of the franchise remember Taylor for the player he was and would have been, and the heroism with which he spent his final moments, something that also impressed his daughter and helped her learn more about her father.

“I am forever grateful for the overwhelming love and support of this special family,” Taylor continued in her statement. “I am filled with gratitude knowing that my father will forever be a part of the burgundy gold family.”

News of the original installation being removed came via a report by ESPN’s John Keim. According to the same report, Jackie Taylor will be involved in the design of the statue, which will be unveiled at a date to be determined.
