Here is a recent AP story:

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Jonathan Gannon knew almost from the moment Shane Steichen joined the Philadelphia Eagles staff in 2021 that he would become an NFL head coach.

So Gannon started taking notes.

Now, three years later, the two coordinators who led the Eagles to the 2022 NFC title met for joint workouts this week in their new roles as head coaches of the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts.

“The first thing I noticed was that he’s a really great communicator and teacher, and you could tell he had the ‘it’ factor,” Gannon said when asked about his thoughts on Steichen. “He’s very detailed. I learned a lot from him, but I needed to get even more detailed to keep up with him.”

Together with the man who hired them in Philadelphia, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, they made a damn good tag team.

Sirianni and Steichen worked together as offensive assistants with the Chargers before Sirianni left in 2018 to take the job of offensive coordinator with the Colts. Two years later, after the Chargers moved to Los Angeles, Steichen became the Chargers’ coordinator.

When Sirianni took the Eagles job in 2021, he brought in Steichen to lead an offense that flourished when Jalen Hurts emerged as an MVP candidate.

Gannon also had a connection with Sirianni that dated back to their time together in Indianapolis when Gannon was the Colts’ defensive backs coach in 2018. Three years later, Gannon followed Sirianni to Philadelphia for his first chance as defensive coordinator.

That’s where things really started to pick up speed.

“Shane is as good as one can be,” Gannon said, “We worked for a really good boss, but we were in the trenches together, so to speak, and we really learned a lot about him.”

The trio took the Eagles to the playoffs in their first season together and then helped them finish first in the NFC with a 14-3 record and reach the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl.

Not surprisingly, Gannon and Steichen’s successes made them instant hot candidates for the head coaching position. It wasn’t long before both left the Eagles to pursue their passion as head coaches.

Steichen was not surprised.

“An absolutely great leader,” Steichen said of Gannon. “In the two years I worked in Philly, he was just a great guy with a lot of energy. You feel him on defense and sometimes as a coordinator you get a chance to talk to the team in team situations. And when he talked, you felt he was going to be a great head coach.”

How successful both will be remains to be seen.

Neither made the playoffs last season. Neither is considered a favorite to win their respective divisions this season. Both rely on high-profile draft picks who are being considered franchise quarterbacks and both have injury histories. And both are trying to solidify their receiver groups while getting their defenses to make big jumps in 2024.

But the intangibles of coaching have not changed, and that is one of the main reasons they agreed to hold two practices against each other at the Grand Park Sports Campus in suburban Indianapolis before their second preseason game on Saturday.

The shoving and fighting that is usually common during joint training sessions was largely avoided on both days, although there was a minor scuffle between the teams during a kickoff exercise on Thursday evening.

It was all intentional.

“Shane has about eight plans, but the practice plan will be the same as yesterday,” Gannon said before rain began to fall on Thursday. “I thought it (Wednesday) was a pretty clean practice, in the right way, with good intensity. I thought we did a good job and both teams did a good job of protecting their teams as well.”

Steichen said Thursday he would not use his regular players on Saturday night. Gannon said he would not make a decision until later this week.

While they were busy doing their work on the field, they also had the opportunity to spend some time together off the field.

When the Cardinals arrived in Westfield, Indiana, on Tuesday night, Steichen invited the Cardinals coaches to dinner – with his typical script.

“As soon as we got together in the restaurant, he put up a Powerpoint presentation – this is where we go, this is what we do,” Gannon said with a laugh. “I know how he runs his team, I know how we train, I know how they train. It just made sense that we came here and did a good job.”
