When will Mr and Mrs Smith Season 2 on Prime Video? That’s a good question, and given the popularity of the Amazon TV show – the first season premiered in February to critical and audience acclaim – our spy network is trying to find an answer.
While we wait for them to tell us about the return of one of the best Prime Video shows, let us tell you everything we know about Season 2 of Mr and Mrs SmithThis includes our thoughts on the release date on Prime Video, potential cast, possible storylines, and the future of the spy comedy. Mr and Mrs Smith The official release date for Season 2 has yet to be announced. However, we do know that it is in the works, with Mr and Mrs Smith Season 2 will be announced in May.
“We are excited to announce the second season of our groundbreaking spy series. Mr and Mrs Smith, is in the works for our Prime Video customers worldwide,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, at the time. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season full of unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Since another installment was only announced in mid-May, it is very likely that Season 2 is in the early stages of development. In short, even though the scripts are currently being written, we do not expect filming to begin until next year, which means Mr and Mrs SmithThe second season will probably not begin until early 2026.

Cast of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Season 2: Probable and Rumored

Currently, we don’t know if the main cast of the first season – Glover and Maya Erskine, who played the title characters – will return.
And indeed, Season 1 ends with a nail-biting cliffhanger—are Jane and John dead? And did they manage to escape the panic room, defeating the other Jane and John (Parker Posey and Wagner Moura) in the process?—we’re still not sure if Glover and Erskine will be back.
Variety claims it’s unlikely the pair will return, with the outlet citing sources close to the production as confirming this. “Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are not expected to return for Season 2,” the website says. “Glover will continue to be credited as co-creator and executive producer of the series alongside Francesca Sloane, who will return as showrunner. In addition, Glover recently announced he will embark on a world tour as Childish Gambino from August to February 2025.”
Reps for the actors have also not commented, but Glover hinted at a possible return for the duo on a June edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying, “Who says we’re not in it? Maybe we are. Maybe we’re not,” which makes things perfectly clear.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (EW), showrunner Francesca Sloane expressed similar confusion over reports that Glover and Erskine will not be returning. She said: “I was just talking to Donald about this last night and we were laughing because one of the press articles said, ‘According to our sources,’ and we thought, ‘Who are those sources?’ We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought long and hard about it. It was one of the first things we wrote. Why on earth – we didn’t say anything – but why on earth would we ruin a cliffhanger because of a headline? Maya and Donald could be dead, they could also not be dead.”
Aside from that couple, Season 1 was a feast of stellar actors, including Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza Gonzalez, John Tuturro, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Wagner Houra, Ron Perlman, and Michaela Coel. So Season 2 will likely see some of them reprise their roles as well, and introduce other familiar names as guest stars and/or cameo roles. There could be new faces as well, and Sloane told The Hollywood Reporter that some big names have asked to guest star in the show’s second season. Bet now on who you’d like to see.
Rumors about the plot of the second season of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”

It is not surprising Mr and Mrs Smith The plot of Season 2 has not yet been finalized. But given the shocking events depicted in the explosive ending of Season 1, there are several directions the series can go from here.
Speaking to EW, Sloane said: “I think there’s definitely a lot more to tell here. And I think we definitely feel like this would be a perfectly satisfying story if it lived on its own, but it definitely has more to it, that’s for sure. The whole season is trying to subvert the genre while also really satisfying the people who love the movie (2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), and I think the people who love the movie are going to be incredibly satisfied with how our finale ends… I think the ending is going to get a lot of people talking.”
We have to prepare ourselves for the fact that we may never know what happened to Glover’s John and Erskine’s Jane. In fact, their fates are in limbo after their brutal showdown with Moura and Posey’s Second Other John and Second Other Jane (yes, that’s what they’re called on the show), so this season could focus on a different John and Jane. Regardless of whether they survived, Sloane promised fans (via EW) that “there will be an answer in Season 2 to what happened at the end of Season 1.”
So what will Mr and Mrs Smith What will Season 2 be about if the characters of Glover and Erskine, whose real names are Michael and Alana, don’t come back?
It could potentially build on the previously unexplained opening scene of season 1, in which Skarsgård and González are attacked as second Johns and Janes. What’s going on with them? When did they become another version of John and Jane? And what happened to land them in that deadly shootout? It would be odd for season 2 to be a prequel focused on that duo, though, so we suspect Sloane and co. will leave that storyline where it is: in the past.
Another (and to us more plausible) possibility is that Season 2 will take a closer look at Posey and Moura’s John and Jane. The two actors have been fantastic additions to the series and we’d love to see more of them. It would be very interesting to see their backstories and other secret missions in Season 2 – events that may even parallel the story of Season 1 – and reveal how and why they were ultimately sent after Glover and Erskine’s John and Jane.
And finally, some speculation: Perhaps there will be a new generation of secret agents to replace Michael and Alana as the show’s John and Jane. We’re not sure how the show will handle their names – would they be called Third Other John and Third Other Jane? We don’t know. It would be fascinating to see, though. Mr and Mrs Smith become an anthology series, especially if each season introduces new versions of John and Jane with their own quirks and different morals. As mentioned, Amazon has a lot of options for directing the show.
Will there be another chapter of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” after season 2?
As with TV shows on the world’s best streaming services, there are no guarantees for series that will continue beyond the current one. Unless they are a huge hit with critics and/or audiences, such as The Rings of Poweror even Netflix Squid Game And Stranger Things.
Mr and Mrs SmithThe first season was a hit for Prime Video – it garnered 964 million minutes streamed in its first three days on the platform (according to Deadline) – and is nominated for several awards at this year’s Primetime Emmy ceremony. However, a third season will depend on how well Mr and Mrs Smith Season 2 is a success, especially without Glover and Erskine, so it might be a long time before we know if there will be a renewal for Season 3.
