Population growth in Chester County and other Philadelphia suburbs has helped Democrats in recent elections. If they keep the momentum going, Kamala Harris could pull off a victory in Pennsylvania in November, write Katie Bernard and Aseem Shukla for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In search of cheaper property prices, more open space and quieter residential areas, more and more city dwellers have moved to the suburbs in recent years.

Once a predominantly rural community, East Brandywine Township is now a picture of suburban sprawl, with many new housing developments replacing former farmland. The population shift has also brought about political change.

In 2012, Republican candidate Mitt Romney won the township. Four years later, former President Donald Trump won one of the three districts, and East Brandywine narrowly went to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

In 2020, President Joe Biden easily won the entire county.

East Brandywine is a good example of Chester County as a whole. The county has voted for the Democratic candidate three times in the last four presidential elections. Before that, the county had voted for a Republican candidate almost every time since 1880, except twice.
