Students at another middle school were caught creating and distributing explicit photos of their classmates

There are more than 12 victims.

Another case of middle school students using AI and deepfake technology to create and distribute inappropriate images of their classmates has come to light. This time, the incident occurred in Hadong County, Gyeongnam, following a similar situation in Busan.

The case involves five students from a local middle school who allegedly used deepfake technology to combine explicit content with photos of their classmates. The altered images were then shared on various social media platforms. The scope of this digital abuse goes beyond a single school: victims have been identified from four different middle schools in the area, totaling 12 affected students.

The creation of these manipulated images reportedly took place in a variety of locations, including the perpetrators’ homes and internet cafes. The incident, which began in late April, only came to the attention of authorities in late July, when a parent came across the disturbing content.

When the incident was discovered, the school reported it to the relevant authorities, and the local police and the Gyeongnam Police Department’s specialized cyber unit began investigating. The Hadong Education Support Office is also taking action and has scheduled a meeting to discuss the issue and determine possible consequences for those involved.

But the case is complicated by legal issues. Under current law, children between the ages of 10 and 14 cannot be prosecuted, but may be subject to protective measures such as probation or community service.

The situation is further complicated by the way the school is dealing with the aftermath. At the request of the victims, both the alleged perpetrators and the victims continue to attend classes together, a decision that the victims and their parents understandably do not like.

As similar cases of digital sex crimes increase at an alarming rate, the need for stricter laws regarding AI, deepfakes and similar technologies is also growing. Just days earlier, a disturbingly similar crime occurred at a middle school in Busan – you can read more about it below.
