How to connect Sony headphones to iPhone: A step-by-step guide

Technology is advancing at such an astonishing rate that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for even the most tech-savvy people to keep up with trends. For example, just a decade or so ago, the idea that mobile phones could be made without a way to connect headphones or earphones would have been crazy. But today, Bluetooth has become the standard for such connections. This advancement has understandably led to companies that make headphones and earphones largely eliminating the wired connection in their own products. Electronics giant Sony is now one of the leading suppliers of Bluetooth headphones.

The tech giant also makes some of the best headphones around. Sony offers more than a dozen models of on-ear headphones with Bluetooth functionality. While each model offers a different level of audio reproduction and noise cancellation, you should be able to easily pair any model with your smartphone using a Bluetooth connection.

This of course includes the iPhone, one of the best-selling smartphones in the world. If you currently use an iPhone and want to get a pair of Sony headphones to better enjoy your favorite music or TV show, you will first need to pair them with your device. This is a relatively painless process that should be easy enough even for the non-technical.

Pairing Sony headphones with an iPhone

If you’ve already bought your Sony headphones, you’re probably dying to plug them in and try them out. Fortunately, the device pairing instructions are virtually identical across the various brands and models of Sony’s on-ear headphones, so the instructions below – specifically tested with the SlashGear-approved WH-1000XM4 model – should be valid regardless of the model you’re using. Here’s how to connect these headphones to your iPhone.

  1. Make sure your headphones and iPhone are charged and turned on and within one meter of each other.
  2. Make sure your headphones are in pairing mode. This happens automatically for headphones that were taken straight out of the box and should be indicated by a flashing blue light on the bottom of the left ear pad. When you wear the headphones, you will also hear a programmed voice saying “Bluetooth pairing”.
  3. Unlock your iPhone and navigate to Bluetooth via the Settings menu.
  4. In Bluetooth settings, click the toggle button to search for pairable devices if the option is not already enabled.
  5. Search for and select the model number of the Sony headphones you want to connect. Note that it may take up to 30 seconds for the model to appear while scanning.
  6. Your devices should now be paired and a programmed voice may confirm this with the message “Bluetooth paired.”

During the pairing process, you may be asked to enter a passkey, passcode, or PIN number. In this case, enter 0000 and the devices should pair successfully. Likewise, the process for pairing Sony headphones with additional Bluetooth devices may vary depending on the model. If you are unable to do this, you may need to consult your user manual.
