Easter Eggs in the music video for “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter

Easter Eggs in the music video for “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter

Okay, we have to give Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega Oscars for this “Taste” music video. An A+ short film if I’ve ever seen one. This is a masterclass in acting from the two Disney Channel High School graduates, and I feel inspired to scheme against a man. (To be honest, I’m always up for it.) As you may have already figured out, this song is probably about Sabrina’s situation with Shawn Mendes in early 2023 and him finally getting back with his ex, Camila Cabello, in April of that year. Remember the video of Shawn and Camila dancing together at Coachella? Yes, that was the messy reunion. Let’s just say the music video, which is based on a famous movie, hints even more at this source of inspiration from Shawmila. The casting seems… deliberate, to say the least. Not to mention, there’s a pretty telling date hidden in the middle.

I did the analysis: Here are all the Easter eggs in Sabrina Carpenter’s music video “Taste”.

The music video is inspired by Death suits her well

The video “Taste” is based on the 1992 black comedy. Death suits her well. In the hilarious classic starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, two women fight over a man and eventually become friends. We love the feminist moral of the story! (Does this mean Sabrina and Camila are cool now?)

The situation of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s doppelgangers

I’m afraid the casting for this music video is definitely an Easter egg in itself. Rohan Campbell, who plays the man being fought over, is a real eye-catcher for Shawn with his boring white t-shirt and brunette locks. And I don’t think it’s a “coincidence” that Jenna was cast either, considering there are multiple TikToks and articles about how much she resembles Camila. Sabrina, you are the mastermind.

The gravestone could be a reference to Shawn Mendes

The tombstone in the video says, “In loving memory of my beloved friend,” and the dates are May 22, 1998 – August 23, 2024. The music video obviously came out on August 23, so that explains that date. Who was born in 1998, you ask? Yes, it rhymes with Mawn Shendes.

ALSO. This might be really far-fetched, but I had to look up May 22nd to see if that had any significance. Apparently May 22nd is National Maritime Day, a holiday honoring the launch of the U.S. shipping industry. Why the heck is that important, you ask? Because Camila Cabello released a song called “BOAT” on her latest album, and the song (I have to assume) is about Shawn. I’m a genius.

Sabrina and Jenna’s jokes at the end

At the end of the video, Sabrina and Jenna babble a bit about the Shawn-like man. “Clingy, a lot of trauma,” Sabrina says to Jenna, who replies, “Very insecure, very insecure.” Sabrina bursts out laughing. Hmmm… maybe some insight into the failure of the affair?
