Bowie police are testing stop sign cameras at major intersections

Officials with the Bowie Police Department announced they will begin a month-long pilot program to use stop sign cameras.

Although exact locations have not yet been announced, stop sign cameras will be installed at two or more of the following intersections:

  • Kenhill Drive at the corner of Belair Drive
  • Belair Drive at the corner of Stonybrook Drive
  • Mt Oak Road at Ann Arbor Lane
  • Fred Robinson Way and Evergreen Parkway
  • Pointer Ridge Drive and Parkington Lane
  • Pin Oak Parkway and Peachtree Lane

The cameras have real-time monitoring capabilities to detect traffic violations.

“The safety of our roads is important to us, and exploring innovative solutions like Obvio Inc.’s stop sign camera system is another tool we can use to ensure our intersections are safer for all drivers and pedestrians,” said Chief Dwayne Preston of the Bowie Police Department.

Police say the cameras do not collect any personal information during this program and no penalties will be imposed for recorded violations.

Instead, the goals of this month-long program are to improve traffic safety by testing new equipment, collecting data on the effectiveness of stop sign cameras and gathering feedback from residents.

Officials with the Bowie Police Department are also asking residents to share their opinions on the program.
