You quickly realize that you are going to have a bad day

How much bad luck does it take to ruin someone’s day? For many of us, one bad morning can throw everything off track.

According to a survey by Avocado Green Mattress and Talker Research, the average American knows by 8:36 a.m. whether they’re going to have a “bad day.” The survey found that people typically experience four “bad days” a month. 26% of the 2,000 people surveyed said their entire day is ruined if something goes wrong in the morning.

The five most common reasons for a bad day?

  1. Waking up feeling unwell (35%)
  2. Poor sleep during the night (31%)
  3. Waking up with a headache (29%)
  4. Lost keys (26%)
  5. Forgot your phone at home (25%)

“How many of you listening right now actually sleep well? When was the last time you slept for eight hours straight?” asked Ursula Reutin on the Gee & Ursula Show. “I can’t remember the last time you slept, even on vacation. That explains why I have bags under my eyes.”

Gee Scott said he knows whether he’s going to have a good day or not when he checks his schedule first thing in the morning. “Mine is very simple,” Gee explained. “When things don’t go according to plan, oh my goodness, here I am overbooked. I messed this up. I get mad at myself when I’m not on schedule. It messes me up. Sure, OK, and I’m having a bad day and I can’t turn it off.”

Ursula said her personal reason for starting the day on the wrong foot was not to make her bed. “I like to leave the house and have a made bed. I like to have time to get dressed and feel comfortable in what I’m wearing in the morning, but the bed is unmade. I just don’t feel comfortable the rest of the day.”

Other reasons cited in the study include forgetting your wallet, missing your alarm, and waking up because of your pet’s mess.

Andrew “Chef” Lanier, the show’s producer, said, “The thing that ruins my morning the most is when the kids are screaming and going ‘oh my God’ and fighting. Yeah, like you haven’t even got dressed yet and they’re already starting to fight.”

Ursula said that another point on the list was that there were no longer enough toilet staff. But that is enough said.
