ForbesTips and answers on today’s NYT’s “Connections” for Friday, August 23

Hey guys! Before we start, I have to apologize. In yesterday’s guide, I accidentally left the answers in when I first revealed the groups. A few of you pointed this out to me (thanks again everyone!) and I fixed the mistake as soon as I could, but that slip-up may have spoiled yesterday’s guide. Connections for many of you.

I really enjoy putting this column together for you every day, but I also take it seriously – I want to make sure I give you the best Connections guide on the internet. I hate that I may have ruined a day Connections for everyone. I messed up and will try not to make the same mistake again. I will be donating my earnings from yesterday’s guide to my favorite charity, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

How to play connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. Every day at midnight you get a new puzzle. You can NYT Website or game app.

You are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to sort these into four groups of four by finding the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names of participants in research studies, or words preceded by a body part.

Each puzzle has only one solution. You must be careful with words that could fit into more than one category. You can mix the words up to see if there are any connections between them.

Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to understand, blue and green are in between, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. The purple group often includes wordplay.

Choose four words that you think go together and press submit. If you guess wrong, you lose a life. When you’re close to getting a correct group, you may see a message letting you know that you’re one word away from the correct group, but you still need to figure out which one to swap out.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with some tips. And if you’re really having trouble, today’s Connections Answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, you can easily share the results with your friends on social media and group chats.

Warning, spoilers! Don’t scroll down until you’re ready to see today’s Connections Answer.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections Answers are …

  • Yellow Group – Hearsay (rumours, speculation, conversations, whispers)
  • Green group – moving secretly (CRAWLING, SLIPPING, STEALING, ON TIPTOE)
  • Blue Group – Car Rentals (BUDGET, ENTERPRISE, NATIONAL, THRIFTY)
  • Purple group – ends with chemical elements (ENVIRON, JARGON, LATIN, PLEAD)

Not a perfect game, but after yesterday’s defeat I’m back on the winning track.

I immediately found the yellow ones and then assumed there might be a group of car rental companies called BUDGET, ENTERPRISE and NATIONAL. I didn’t know what the fourth one was so I turned my attention elsewhere and found the green ones.

I had no idea about the purple group, so I went back to my car rental theory and made random guesses on the fourth word (remember, I don’t use Google while playing this game) until I luckily came across THRIFTY on the fourth and final try. I highly doubt I would have figured out the purple connection.

PS: I’ve been enjoying it for a while, but it’s only been in the last few days that Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” has really crept into my brain. I’m looking forward to listening to her new album when I get the chance this weekend.
