Soon your Uber could be a self-driving car

Your Uber may soon be driverless – but that’s the point.

The ride-sharing company has partnered with self-driving car company Cruise to bring its self-driving cars to the Uber platform.

The companies plan to launch their partnership in 2025 with a line of autonomous vehicles from Cruise based on the Chevy Bolt.

Next year, customers who request a qualified ride may be offered the option to complete the ride in an autonomous Cruise vehicle. They can choose that or book a standard ride with a driver.

“As the largest mobility and delivery platform, we believe Uber can play an important role in safely and reliably bringing autonomous technology to consumers and cities around the world,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a press release. “We are thrilled to partner with Cruise and look forward to launching next year.”

This move comes at a time when more and more self-driving cars from companies like Tesla are hitting the road.

“Cruise is committed to using driverless technology to create safer streets and redefine urban life,” Cruise CEO Marc Whitten said in a press release. “We are excited to partner with Uber to bring the benefits of safe, reliable, autonomous driving to even more people and usher in a new era of urban mobility.”

Last year, former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt resigned due to a series of problems with the company’s vehicles.

Since June, Cruise has again offered supervised autonomous driving in Phoenix, Houston and Dallas. The company is also currently conducting tests in Dubai.
