Moscow will not abandon its offensive in the Donetsk region to stop Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region

It is more important for the Russian armed forces and the Russian leadership to continue the offensive on the Pokrovsk axis in the Donetsk region than to stop Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region.

This is a statement by the think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), reports Ukrinform.

“ISW continues to believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian military are likely to continue to prioritize Russian offensive operations in eastern Ukraine, specifically in the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions,” the report said.

The Russian military command recently relocated parts of at least one Russian airborne regiment (VDV) from the western Zaporizhia region in response to Ukraine’s invasion of the Kursk region, possibly in an effort to stabilize the fronts and improve command and control over Russian conscripts.

“These are not priority frontline areas for the Russian military. We have not seen any troop movements from Pokrovsk because Russia will continue to try to achieve as many territorial objectives as possible in the Donetsk region and will not put these efforts on hold just to quickly repel the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk,” said Karolina Hird of the Institute for the Study of War.
