Manufacturer seeks incentives for plant and creates 165 jobs

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing to consider an economic development request for a manufacturer seeking to open a local factory with at least 165 jobs.

The board will consider a stimulus package at 2 p.m. on Sept. 5 that appears similar in detail to a proposal before the Winston-Salem City Council.

The commission’s legal notice, released on Friday, said the unnamed company had committed to creating 165 full-time and full-time equivalent jobs with an average annual wage of $55,452 and would invest $6.25 million in capital, it said.

The manufacturer is demanding performance-related bonuses of up to $88,749 over a five-year period.

The council has scheduled a public hearing on the application, which also mentions a commitment of $6.25 million in capital investment, for September 3 at 6 p.m.

The Council has provided additional information on the applicant for the so-called ‘Kohlrabi Project’, some of which differs slightly from the Commissioners’ legal communication.

The applicant is described as a fresh produce wholesaler looking for a warehouse location that would provide 305 jobs when in full production.

In addition to creating 165 jobs, the company announced it will relocate 140 jobs to a location in Winston-Salem.

The company is demanding performance-related incentives from the city of up to $86,550.

City officials said the company was looking for a cold storage facility for its distribution operations and would transport large quantities of produce for growers and farmers.

The company supplies food to importers, retailers, catering establishments, schools, prisons and restaurants, the city said.

Although the company is considering Winston-Salem as a relocation option, the city said the company is also considering locations in other parts of North Carolina as well as South Carolina.

However, when an incentive application reaches the local public hearing, the vast majority of companies typically move to a commitment provided their incentive package is approved.

The city said the company will hire delivery drivers, warehouse workers and order pickers, as well as operations management and purchasing staff. The city said the positions would pay an average annual wage of $51,369.
