Police in Westover arrest man with drugs and arrest warrant during traffic stop

During a traffic stop conducted by Westover Police on Friday morning, a man was arrested on an outstanding warrant issued by Morgantown Police and several drugs were seized.

At about 1:27 a.m. Friday, Officer Rutledge of the WPD saw a vehicle with a defective headlight turn from Tower Lane onto Holland Avenue, according to a police report.

The driver of the vehicle told Rutledge that he did not have a valid driver’s license. The officer gave him the option of either calling a licensed driver to pick up the vehicle or calling a tow truck. The driver chose to call a licensed driver, but it would take some time for one to arrive.

Rutledge noted that the passenger in the back seat of the vehicle appeared nervous and under the influence of narcotics due to “agitation, pinpoint pupils, and excessive sweating.”

Due to the anxious behavior of the passengers and the fact that the officer would be waiting there with them for a long time, all passengers were identified by name and date of birth for security reasons.

The nervous-looking passenger in the back seat was identified as 25-year-old Anthony Lawrence. According to the report, the officer soon learned that Morgantown police had an outstanding arrest warrant for Lawrence.

A warrant for arrest – also known as a citation warrant – is a warrant issued by a justice of the peace or judge, typically when someone fails to appear in court, pays fines, or fails to comply with court orders.

Lawrence was arrested and transported to the Morgantown Police Department.

When Rutledge searched a bag belonging to Lawrence, he found approximately 15 grams of methamphetamine and a small amount of marijuana and fentanyl, including an electronic scale and other drug paraphernalia.

Lawrence is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to resell and is currently being held at the North Central Regional Jail.
