Designs approved due to peer pressure, engineers tell Ghose panel

Two former engineers of the Central Designs Organisation (CDO) of the Irrigation Department, who were participating in the investigation into the alleged irregularities in the construction of the dams of the Kaleshwaram Project, particularly the Medigadda dam, a section of which was damaged last October, told the Judicial and Police Commission that they based most of their decisions on peer pressure.

The commission on Friday continued to question former chief engineer in the CDO, Narender Reddy, and also questioned former executive engineer Fazal.

According to official sources, he informed the commission that they had approved the designs for secant piles in the foundation of the Medigadda Dam after initially opting for sheet piles on the instructions of the then Chief Engineer of the project.

Similarly, additional vents in the second block were approved as per the instructions of the colleagues and the cross sections were also approved based on the report of the then Chief Engineer of the project. He is said to have told the panel that they had approved the site without even visiting it.

Mr Narender Reddy is said to have submitted some documents to support his statement before the panel on Friday.
