The judge ruled that the actions of Taylor’s boyfriend, who fired at police the night of the raid, were the legal cause of her death, not an unjustified arrest warrant.

Michigan State Police officer faces trial for murder of man hit by SUV

Police officer Brian Keely was charged with first-degree murder after a video showed him hitting a fleeing suspect with an unmarked patrol car and pinning him against a wall.

The incident began when Michigan State Police responded to a domestic emergency call on Aug. 3, the report said.

In the footage, a woman is seen sitting on a street as the officer approaches. The officer spoke to the woman for several minutes, during which the woman admitted to assaulting someone. The redacted video removes the context of the attack. The officer then began to arrest the woman.

When the officer told the woman that she could not take her purse into the jail, she became agitated, which led to a struggle during which she allegedly threatened to sue the officer. The officer attempted to handcuff the woman, but she bit the officer in the process.

Additional police officers arrived, handcuffed the woman, and placed her in a patrol car. However, she managed to break free of the handcuffs, get into the driver’s seat, and escape in the vehicle. The video ends with her leading the officers on a high-speed chase.

The woman eventually crashed the patrol car into a swamp, where she was arrested, according to the report. She was charged with several crimes, including assault on a police officer, driving while under a license, fleeing from a police officer and intentional homicide of police officers.

The Muskegon County District Attorney’s Office emphasized the seriousness of the charges, citing the danger posed to both officers and the public during the incident.

“Our primary concern is officer safety, but she raised the stakes by leading police on a high-speed chase that put everyone in danger,” said Timothy Maat, senior assistant district attorney.
