Imtiaz Ali reveals how Ranbir Kapoor got into Rockstar: “I lost the script and had to rewrite it”

Rockstar is a cult classic of Indian cinema created by ace director Imtiaz Ali. It stars Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri in a heartwarming story that made an impression for years. Even after 13 years, the film is still popular and its music album has got us hooked. Director Imtiaz Ali recently shared an anecdote from the making of the film when he lost the script of Rockstar and had to rewrite it.

In an interview with Mid-day, the director recalled how Ranbir Kapoor narrated the story of Rockstar and bagged a role in the film. He said, “Love Aaj Kal was being made, so his father must have told him about me, oh wait, Deepika had told him all about me. She was in the film… so, we knew each other but we had never met. We met at a screening and then we decided to meet. So I met him and told him about a script based on which I wanted to do a film with him. It was a different script (not Rockstar). Before I got to it, I asked him if he had read it, he said ‘yes’, we didn’t really get to talk about it much and then he said ‘Sir, you have this other film (he mentions Rockstar)’, so I asked him how he knew about it and he said a friend of his had told him. He then told the story of this guy who wants to be a musician but has never experienced any tragedy in his life,” and he asked, “This is your film, isn’t it?”

Imtiaz thought Ranbir was the ideal man for the film and offered him the lead role. He then decided to do the film but he had lost the script and had to rewrite it. “He is the right man for this film! He narrated the story to me and that turned out to be very good. So I asked him if he wanted to do the film and he said, ‘Yes sir, let’s do it’, so I said, ‘Give me some time, I will check where the script is, I will write it and give it to you. I had lost the script. So I had to rewrite it.”
