Week 0 Preview: FSU, GT and SMU open the 2024 ACC football season

CHARLOTTE, NC (theACC.com) – Three Atlantic Coast Conference teams will be in action this weekend when the 2024 college football season begins. The schedule includes one conference game, a showdown between No. 10 Florida State and Georgia Tech in the Aer Lingus College Football Classics in Dublin, Ireland. League newcomer SMU will also play away against Nevada.

Florida State and Georgia Tech will open the 2024 college football season in Aer Lingus College Football Classics in Dublin, Ireland, with ESPN’s College GameDay, created by The Home Depot also travel internationally. The season opener in Dublin will mark Florida State’s 36th GameDay appearance, eighth-most in the country and the most of any ACC school. This is the first international game in Florida State’s program history, while Georgia Tech defeated Boston College 17-14 in the 2016 season opener in Ireland.

After winning the 2023 ACC Football Championship, Florida State was also voted by the media as the favorite for the 2024 championship. The Seminoles have gone 23-4 over the past two seasons, the best record in the ACC and fourth in the FBS, including a perfect 8-0 record in ACC play last year. The Seminoles enter the game having won 11 consecutive ACC games in the regular season. Georgia Tech is coming off a seven-win season – its highest single-season total since 2018. The future continues to look bright in Atlanta, as second-year head coach Brent Key already boasts a perfect 4-0 record against higher-ranked opponents.

The Week Zero game will mark SMU’s first appearance as a member of the ACC. In their first game of the season, the Mustangs will travel to Reno, Nevada for the first time since 2003 and will be the seventh meeting between the two schools. With 11 wins in 2023, SMU posted its highest single-season win total since 1982. The Mustangs have combined for 18 wins over the past two seasons, matching the program’s best two-year streak since 1983-84.
