Edo: 4 female prison inmates to take NECO exam 2024

The candidates who sat for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in June/July 2024 included four female inmates of the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

DAILY POST reports that the four inmates were among the six inmates who registered for the National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO) examination.

The command said the inmates were from a detention facility in Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West local government area.

A statement by SC Aminu Suleman, the command’s spokesman, said that only four detainees sat for the exam, while the other two did not because they were lawfully released from prison before the exams began.

Suleman said the inmates began their education by attending adult literacy classes at the women’s correctional facility.

He added that the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections in charge of the facility, DCC Odoh Jane, congratulated the inmates on the milestone.

Jane said she was very proud of the inmates and praised their resilience and commitment to being better citizens.

She noted that the Nigerian Correctional Service under the leadership of CGCS Haliru Nababa was able to ensure the rehabilitation and re-education of inmates through various measures including education, skills acquisition and sports, among others.

She stated that the Edo State Correctional Service Commissioner, Emehinola Philomena, had assured all inmates of continued support in their quest for successful re-education, rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The deputy director of prisons advised the inmates: “When you are released, make sure you continue your studies, excel and make your contribution to a better society.”

On behalf of the other inmates, Miss Mercy thanked the Controller General of Prisons and other leaders for making a dream come true and pledged to act as ambassadors of change.
