16-year-old shot dead in argument over video game, police said

CROWLEY, Texas (KTVT) – A Texas family is mourning the death of a 16-year-old who was allegedly shot in the chest by a 35-year-old man.

The incident is said to have stemmed from an argument over a video game at a home in Crowley.

According to police, 35-year-old Deeven Jones was playing video games with 16-year-old Tavion Swindell.

According to the arrest affidavit, words commonly associated with “smack talking” were exchanged during the game.

Jones then pulled out a gun and put it to Tavion’s chest. Police said the gun discharged, striking Tavion in the chest.

According to police, it all happened at Jones’ home in the 1200 block of Celeste Street in Crowley. They also say Jones left the house with the gun and threw away his cellphone after the shooting.

Tavion’s mother said Jones was actually related to her son, which was not mentioned in the police report. She added that Jones was the one who called 911 after the shooting.

Michelle Morgan of the crime prevention agency One Safe Place acknowledges that there are still many unanswered questions about the events surrounding the shooting.

“From a crime prevention perspective, we now have this tragic death of a 16-year-old that could have been prevented, and we simply failed to address a family conflict,” Morgan said.

Tavion’s mother called her son “Tay Bug” and described him as a big teddy bear. She said he was a star football player and dreamed of either playing in the NFL or becoming an engineer.

Tavion was a student at Southwest High School in Fort Worth.

The principal says counselors will be available to grieving students and staff.
