In February, news came that another manga, Narutos, was adapted into a live-action film. So far, the results have been mixed, although there seem to be more failures than successes. There is a long list of reasons why these adaptations have so much trouble, but these stories have huge fan bases, and when they make it, these adaptations are huge – looking at you, A piece on Netflix. We haven’t heard anything about the film since then and it seems like it’s still in its early stages, but a lot has happened. Destin Daniel Cretton was commissioned to direct and write Naruto, Tasha Huo wrote the original screenplay. Huo has been involved in the adaptation of numerous media from one medium to another, such as The Witcher: Blood Origins, Tomb Raider, The Legend of Lara Croft, and the upcoming Red Sonja film. She recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and explained that her version of the script is finished. She also assured everyone that this was not just a cheap money-making scheme for anyone involved.

“I think it’s such a cool choice because it’s able to capture the nuances and uniqueness of Naruto without being distracted by the bigger picture. I think it’s something that someone who isn’t a fan or who is just looking for the money could do,” she says. “This is definitely a film that’s made out of love for Naruto, the character and his relationships.”

A live-action version of Naruto has been floating around Hollywood since at least 2015, but considering how long the manga ran (it ran from 1999 to 2014), you have to wonder what part of that story they’ll adapt. If you spent any time in the anime and manga fandom in the early 2000s, you’ve probably read or seen something from Naruto. Like most long-running manga, they sometimes go on so long that fans drop out before the project ends. This massive number of volumes can be very daunting for new fans too, though these are all problems that comics face. Similar to A piecethere are loyal fans who grew up on Narutoand Lionsgate must hold this landing, otherwise we will have another Ghost in the Shell Situation we are facing.
