WATCH: Harris’ background as a child of immigrants makes her a better leader, says Senator Padilla

On the final night of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris will become the first woman of color in American history to accept a party’s presidential nomination. Senator Alex Padilla (D-California) says Harris’ professional and life experiences make her a strong leader.

REGARD: Harris’ “heart is her superpower,” says California Senator Butler

“When you had to pay your way through college, it’s just a little bit different,” Padilla told PBS News. “When you’ve been discriminated against or at least doubted while you’re sitting in the room trying to assert yourself at the decision-making table, it’s just a little bit different. When that perspective is reflected in every negotiation, every deliberation, every major policy decision … it’s only going to make decision-making and leadership better and stronger, and that’s exactly what Kamala Harris stands for.”

Padilla also said he believes Harris, a first-generation immigrant, will improve the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies.

“As vice president, she talked about the border, but she also talked to leaders in Mexico, Central America and elsewhere, and we are seeing the results,” he said, pointing to a significant drop in the number of migrants at the southern border.
