DNC state representatives put Michigan in the political spotlight

LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – A number of Michigan state representatives at the Democratic National Convention could be a sign that the state is becoming a more important political player.

Michigan residents tuning in on the final night of the DNC may spot a few familiar faces on stage.

Also among those speaking Thursday are Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin. Their remarks come just a day after a speech by Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Matt Grossman, director of Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy, said their participation could put the state of Michigan in an even stronger political spotlight.

“It’s no surprise that Michigan is a swing state and one of the two or three states that matter most in the presidential election. It’s no surprise that Michigan politicians are at the center of it,” he told News 10.

Grossman said Michigan, as a swing state, could be the deciding factor in a close presidential race. As Michigan’s politicians become more well-known to a national audience, the state could remain a major political player, he said.

“There is evidence that policymakers are directing resources to places that could influence their elections,” he said. “So it’s possible we could benefit from that.”

Governor Whitmer expressed her support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris ahead of Whitmer’s own speech at the convention, saying voters are facing “someone who talks about economic opportunity for all while only looking out for herself.”

Grossman said, however, that Democratic enthusiasm is no guarantee that Michigan will remain a blue state.

“Even in November, there’s a good chance that Republicans will take control of the state legislature, that they’ll win the presidential election in Michigan or win the Senate election,” he said. “So this year it all depends on the voters and how the state as a whole moves forward.”

Grossman expects people to see a lot more of the governor in the future, calling her one of the Democratic Party’s “rising stars” as she continues to gain popularity among voters across the United States.
