2 people stabbed at West Broad Street Pulse stop in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Two people were treated for stab wounds following a fight along West Broad Street in Richmond, VCU police confirmed in a crime alert to the community.

“Police responded to reports of a fight at the GRTC Pulse Bus Station. A witness reported that one victim was stabbed during the altercation but left the area. Both victims were found with stab wounds and received medical attention for their injuries. The victims have no affiliation with VCU,” the alert said Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the Pulse bus stop in the 1000 block of West Broad Street at around 3:19 p.m.

VCU Police alerted the campus community and asked people to avoid the area while police investigated. The area around the VCU/VUU Pulse stop has reopened and buses are running.

“GRTC is aware of two recent incidents on Pulse platforms and is taking active steps to continue to improve the safety and transparency of GRTC bus service,” a GRTC spokesperson wrote in a statement. “While these isolated incidents do not reflect the everyday reality of transportation safety, they are unacceptable. Safety is GRTC’s top priority, which is why we are reorganizing and refocusing our Safety Department. This revamped department will include dedicated staff and contractors who will develop, monitor and ensure safety on GRTC buses and at stations and platforms. We look forward to working with our partners and new team members to continue to improve GRTC service for all passengers.”

The VCU Alert indicated that police were looking for a suspect in connection with the stabbings Thursday afternoon.

The stabbings reported Thursday occurred hours after a man was stabbed to death at a GRTC Pulse bus stop near the Quirk Hotel in Richmond on Wednesday night, sources told Crime Insider Jon Burkett.

According to Richmond Police Capt. Frank Scarpa, officers were called to the 300 block of N. Madison Street just after 10:25 p.m. Wednesday for a reported stabbing. When police arrived, they found a man who had been stabbed in the chest. Police confirmed the victim was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said there was no connection between the stabbing on Wednesday evening and the one on Thursday afternoon.
