WATCH: Official explains why DNC denied Palestinian American a speech

In the run-up to and during the Democratic National Convention, the Uncommitted movement asked Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team to give a Palestinian American a speaking slot on the convention’s main stage.

One day before Harris’ keynote speech accepting her party’s nomination, her campaign team announced that her request would not be approved.

When asked why the campaign refused to devote time to the group, Michael Tyler, communications director for Harris’ campaign, said they were proud to have held a panel discussion with members of the movement this week and to continue to engage them during the convention.

What the group or any people who continue to protest will see is a president “who is committed to ending the violence, … who will ensure that we resolve this conflict with a permanent ceasefire, that provides complete security for Israel, that is fully sustained and that ensures that we receive comprehensive humanitarian assistance, but who also ensures that the people of Gaza can live peacefully and prosperously,” he said.

For the approximately 30 pro-Palestinian delegates of the Uncommitted Party, who had traveled to Chicago to pay more attention to their overarching demands – a ceasefire and an arms embargo against Israel – this step is an unwelcome development.
