Jesse Bethel High School locked down after student brought loaded gun to school – Times Herald Online

Jesse Bethel High School was placed on lockdown Thursday after a student allegedly brought a loaded firearm into the schoolyard.

According to Principal Kehinde Stevenson, a student alerted school officials that another student was carrying the weapon. The student was immediately removed from the classroom and Vallejo police began an investigation.

Rashad Hollis, spokesman for the VPD, said the student was a minor and was arrested. No further details about the arrest were released at press time.

Stevenson said the school takes all threats seriously and only evacuated the campus after it was confirmed there were no other weapons on campus. It is not immediately clear how such a verification was conducted, but Stevenson noted in the statement that the campus remained locked down and the outside gates locked until such confirmation was given for the all-clear.

He added that anyone who becomes aware of a threat is encouraged to inform his office.

“We are very proud of our students and their willingness to educate adults about seeing a weapon on campus,” Stevenson said in a statement. “While we cannot control events outside the boundaries of our school, my team and I are committed to ensuring the safety of our school environment during their time here.”
