Google Keep now uses Gemini to help you create all kinds of lists

Highlights

  • Google Keep adds the Gemini-powered “Help me make a list” note-taking tool.
  • Gemini replaces Google Assistant, starting with the Pixel 9 series of phones.
  • Gemini’s AI capabilities will also be integrated into other Google apps, such as Photos and Chrome, to assist users.

Google Gemini took the world by storm when it was unveiled late last year, and the AI-powered assistant just keeps getting better. Recently, it was announced at Made by Google 2024 that Google Assistant will be replaced by Gemini with the release of the Pixel 9 series of phones. That’s a big deal, and while we’ve been expecting it for a long time, it’s an unfortunate but understandable end for the usually reliable phone assistant. Nonetheless, Gemini’s significant advancements continue to shine a spotlight on what the LLM can do for its users, and folks who use Google Keep as a note-taking app will soon get some AI features to try out.

Help Me Make a List, a Gemini-powered feature that’s long been in the works for Google Keep, is finally rolling out to the masses, according to 9to5Google. Similar to many other tools that use Gemini’s learning model, like Help Me Write, Help Me Make a List gives users a huge head start on note-taking for things like making a grocery list. The possibilities are endless, and the feature is even being made available to users who don’t have a Google One subscription. It’s not device-specific, meaning almost anyone with a relatively new phone with the latest version of Keep installed can test out the feature in a short amount of time. The latest version 9to5Google tested was v2.24.332.02.90, which adds a toggle to turn AI help on and off.

Google Keep isn’t the only app Gemini’s developers have targeted for their AI tool portfolio. Recently, AssembleDebug discovered code in the latest beta version of the Google app that points to an “Ask Photos” extension for Gemini. This might allow users to ask Gemini for help with things it can only know by searching their photos. Gemini already helps users write in its many word-heavy programs and apps, like Google Chrome, Gmail, and others. Researchers will soon get help from Gemini’s upcoming “Research with Gemini” feature, which creates customized reports for users’ specific questions.

So many people could use Keep, and while many people can’t think of a note-taking app they can use, Google Keep’s strength lies in its simplicity. While that’s a consideration, we also think Keep’s weakness is that it doesn’t focus on what it does best: being a note-taking app. We think Apple Notes has come a long way in the last few years, and there are a ton of good alternatives on Android that could tempt you to never touch Keep. One of those alternatives is Microsoft OneNote, and it could establish itself as a rival to Keep in the lock screen note-taking space.
