VIDEO: Enrollment growth coupled with growing pains

“Welcome back,” says President Armacost, who also talks about parking in his first video message in autumn 2024

“Welcome back to the fall semester,” says President Andrew Armacost in his first video message of the new academic year.

At the corner of University Avenue and Stanford Road, Armacost and two guests discuss changes to parking on campus in light of “near historic highs” in enrollment.

For the latest information on all parking topics, visit the UND Parking Services website and Parking Updates blog, says Jenny Duffy, Manager of Support Services.

As UND welcomes more students this year, “it’s going to be a little more hectic and crazy,” Armacost says. But with a little forbearance and support for one another, and with the help of UND’s exceptional staff, the UND community can welcome new students with “applause and excitement,” he says.

Duffy talks about the parking changes now in effect near the Chester Fritz Performing Arts Center and elsewhere, as well as the parking ramp, which is now fully mixed-use, with ramp permits and hourly, use-based passport parking. Specific zoning changes are available online.

UND is also introducing a new park-and-ride shuttle for holders of parking permits “A” and “S” operated by the 10th Avenue Shopping Center (commonly referred to as the Jimmy Johns parking lot) to the south side of the Memorial Union.

Mark Johnson, interim associate vice president of facilities, talks with Armacost and Duffy about the setting of the video: a future parking lot at the corner of University Avenue and Stanford Road, scheduled for completion in fall 2025.

The new site will accommodate nearby dormitories with a capacity of 500 cars, Johnson says. The design process is underway and construction will begin as soon as conditions permit in 2025.

“Thank you for what your teams do to make our parking system safe, efficient and supportive of the campus mission,” said Armacost. “To all members of our campus, welcome back. It’s great to have you back on campus.”

“Let’s continue to look after each other, our well-being and how things are going on campus. If you run into trouble, speak up and you’ll find many answers here in the great offices that support you.”
