Petition demands that Hogwarts Legacy 2 not become a live service game

Hogwarts Legacy fans don’t want any more chaos in the live service

In March 2024, Warner Bros.’ head of games, JB Perrette, spoke at a Morgan Stanley event and told fans that the company was interested in developing more live service titles. As GameSpot reported, Perrette spoke about the turning point of a game like Hogwarts Legacy into a live service experience. He suggested that one-and-done games could be transformed into something more permanent, explaining:

“Instead of just launching a one-off console game, how do we develop a game around, for example, a
Hogwarts Legacy
or
Harry Potter
this is a live service where people can live, work, build and play in this world permanently?”

These comments were the trigger Hogwarts Legacy Fan Kevin Malcom starts a petition To Change.org demand that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will not be transformed into a live service experience. The petition states: Hogwarts Legacy was an entertaining game from the start, especially because it is a single player experience and that “people don’t want a live service full of microtransactions and forced drudgery.“There is some truth in these statements, Hogwarts Legacy was rated so incredibly highly as a game due to its huge single-player offering and professional recreation of Hogwarts and its surroundings.

The petition also calls on Avalanche Software employees to fight back against Warner Bros.particularly against its exploitative business practices. So far, the petition has almost reached its goal of 10,000 signatures, with dozens of gamers signing daily in the hope that it will change Warner Bros.’ mind. It is clear that there is both fear and hatred of live service games and of Hogwarts Legacy 2 go in this direction.

Despite Warner Bros.’ insistence that everything should be a live service game, its history with the genre has not been incredibly successful. It had moderate but still disappointing success with its platform fighter MultiVersusalthough this seems to have disappeared from the zeitgeist. his attempt to squeeze in live service elements Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League proved fatal not only for the narrative and overall gameplay of the game, but also for its future.

According to SteamDB, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has an all-time peak player count of just 13,459, with 24-hour peaks rarely exceeding 200 players. This is exceptionally low for a triple-A release, especially compared to Hogwarts Legacya single-player title that still attracts between 4,000 and 10,000 players per day on Steam, with an all-time peak of 879,308 players. These Steam numbers alone make it clear why Warner Bros. wants to exploit the Hogwarts Legacy franchise to the fullest.but turning it into a live service game would end in disaster.

These player counts are for Steam only and do not take into account player counts on other platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation. However, Steam player counts are usually a good indicator of a game’s overall performance.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was developed by Rocksteady Studios, who developed the popular single-player game Batman: Arkham series and was based on a number of characters that became popular thanks to James Gunn’s The suicide squad. Thanks to the pedigree of its developer and its brand, it should have easily gained a large fan base from the start, but its exceptionally low reviews and reportedly mediocre gameplay caused it to flop. Warner Bros. has admitted Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed many timesand said, as IGN reported, that it was “did not meet our expectations.”

It is quite possible that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is offered as a live service game or at least include live service elements. However, there are many that Hogwarts Legacy 2 should borrow from other games, it should not be a live service game. Warner Bros. has proven that it does not know what the best approach is to create a compelling live service experience, and Avalanche Software’s lack of experience with the genre, outside of the now-defunct Disney Infinityis another reason why it should remain a purely single-player experience.

It is unclear whether this Hogwarts Legacy 2 Petition will change something, it is the final proof that there is a call for Hogwarts Legacy 2 to avoid the same fate that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. If Hogwarts Legacy 2 To be successful, it should stick to what it does best, which is provide a fun and magical narrative-driven single-player experience. For now, though, fans like Kevin Malcom will just have to hope that a Hogwarts Legacy The sequel will offer the same as the first game.
