Come and take a trip to the Roman Baths with It Thing.
The Melbourne-based post-punk band from Hobart have announced a new EP, Spirit levellast week, while also releasing the album’s scorching first single.
“Roman Baths” is everything you’d expect from It Thing: edgy, roiling post-punk full of danceable energy, with Charlotte Gigi’s lively vocals leading the way brilliantly.
“Roman Baths is about the ruins left behind by ancient civilisations. The baths were originally believed to have healing properties, but they have now become acidic. It’s about the human desire to improve ourselves and the belief that ancient people could help modern people,” says Gigi.
The whole EP is essentially about how people have never changed. Always nostalgic, always wanting things we don’t have, always violent, always wanting the same basic things.”

In the clip, Gigi can be seen strolling along a remarkable location in her adopted home, the St. Kilda Esplanade – the esplanade from The Song by Paul Kelly – with the full band, including shadow loops and projections of arthouse films of the past.
Following the double 7″ single “Constant State” / “PCH” last year, It Thing is now featured in our “Song You Need to Know” series for the second time.
As Gigi explained at the time of publication, “Constant State” “about my ever-fluctuating mental state – I’m just trying to find a balance between feeling extreme emotions and feeling stagnant and dead.”
Spirit level is out August 30th and the EP is available to pre-order now on limited edition cassette. It Thing’s EP is released via the ever-reliable Marthouse Records (Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice, Gut Health).
To celebrate their new EP, It Thing will embark on their first ever national tour in August and September, supporting labelmates Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice up and down the east coast, kicking off this Friday in Byron Bay (more info here).
