Fiio has expanded its FT series of wired over-ear headphones to include the affordable, wood-clad FT3. Alongside the Fiio FT3 and FT5 models, the former being the company’s first over-ears, the FT1 rounds off the current range as an even more affordable model.
The closed-back FT1 features 60mm dynamic drivers. Fiio claims the new headphones deliver “excellent high-frequency extension” and “clean, precise sound.” Their large drivers aim for deep, rich sound in the low end, striving for deep, solid bass response without distortion.
The FT1’s wooden shells are made from American black walnut, a high-density material chosen for its ability to reduce cavity resonance and therefore unwanted sound distortion. But that’s not the end of the wood technology: the FT1’s diaphragm is made primarily from paper spruce wood fibers, which Fiio says contribute to greater clarity and more natural tonality.
A custom-designed suspension diaphragm and an ultra-fine copper-clad aluminum voice coil are further evidence of Fiio’s commitment to delivering a purer, more authentic sound here.
The FT1 shares the same ergonomic headband as its siblings and features a three-axis arrangement for freer rotation at multiple angles and a comfortable, snug fit. Breathable fabric ear pads ensure greater comfort and wearability even during extended listening. After all, nobody likes sweaty ears.
The FT1 comes with two interchangeable headphone cables – a 3.5mm unbalanced and a 4.4mm balanced.
We really like the Fiio FT3 headphones (reviewed at £289/$299), having praised their insightful, straightforward and well-organized nature in our FT3 review. That bodes well for the FT1s, which are available now and cost £139/$159/€159, significantly less than their four-star counterparts.
