Yesterday evening, a fire broke out in the water supply system of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant: As a result, cooling tower number one caught fire and other technical equipment was damaged.

The cooling tower of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant burned down from the inside after a drone attack, and the repair times will be clear after the damage assessment, the nuclear power plant’s communications director told the Ria Novosti news agency. Yevgenia Yaschina. Earlier, the state-owned company Rosatom stated that the cooling tower of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant had been seriously damaged as a result of two direct attacks by drones of the Ukrainian armed forces: the fire that broke out afterwards was extinguished by operators of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the risk of collapse of the structure will be assessed by specialists as soon as the situation allows.

“The cooling tower burned from the inside. The timing and possibility of restoring the structure will be clear after the damage assessment,” said Jashina. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)Rafael Grossisaid there were no threats to the safety of the nuclear power plant.

The probable cause of the fire at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is considered to be the negligence of the Russian occupiers or a deliberate arson of the cooling tower. This was reported by Energoatom, the state nuclear energy company of Ukraine, on Telegram. “There are no violations of the limits and conditions for safe operation. No exceedances of the control values for emissions and discharges of radioactive substances were recorded. The probable cause of the fire is considered to be the negligence of the occupants or a deliberate arson of the cooling tower,” said Energoatom.

Cooling tower number one is located about a kilometer from the nuclear power plant. “It is known that the Russians use the premises and buildings of the nuclear power plant as military warehouses for storing military equipment, weapons, explosives and ammunition. They have placed military vehicles in the warehouses of the power plant. Cooling towers are also used as storage facilities and for hiding military equipment and ammunition, which significantly increases the risk of fire at the production facilities of the nuclear power plant,” Energoatom reported.
