‘Works with Trump,’ says Tim Walz as Democrats spotlight Jan. 6 riots | US News

“It is time to close the chapter on Donald Trump,” said Tim Walz in a groundbreaking speech outlining his position to Republicans.

Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential nominee officially introduced himself to his Democratic supporters, urging them to “give it their all on the field” until Election Day, harking back to his time as a high school American football coach.

“Our job is to get into the trenches and block and tackle,” he said in his speech on the third night of the Democratic National Convention.

“One inch at a time, one yard at a time, one phone call at a time, one knock on the door at a time, one $5 donation at a time.”

“We only have 76 days left. That’s nothing. We’ll sleep when we’re dead. And we’ll leave everything on the field.”

Earlier this week, Mr Walz accused of lying about his wife giving birth to their daughter Hope through artificial insemination.

He had previously suggested that he and Gwen Walz had undergone artificial insemination to conceive their daughter, but Ms. Walz later stated that they had used intrauterine insemination (IUI).

In his speech, he addressed the issue, saying, “We have also protected reproductive freedom because in Minnesota we respect our neighbors and their personal choices.”

“And even if we wouldn’t make the same decisions for ourselves, we have one golden rule: Mind your own shit.

“This includes IVF and fertility treatments. This is a personal matter for Gwen and me. If you have never experienced the hell of infertility, I guarantee you know someone who has.”

“Don’t forget who saved democracy”

During the night, the Democrats turned the spotlight on 6 Januarywith a video showing Mr Trump urging his supporters to fight before they storm the US Capitol to try to prevent Joe Biden’s victory in 2020.

Pelosi attacks Trump but does not mention him by name

Nancy Pelosi, who was Speaker of the House that day, said: “We must not forget who attacked democracy on January 6th – it was him.”

“But we must not forget who saved democracy that day – it was us.”

Never before has a US president “so brazenly attacked the foundations of our democracy,” she added, “so readily embraced political violence, and so willfully violated his oath of office.”

She thanked outgoing President Joe Biden before turning her attention to Mrs Harris, who she said was ready to lead the United States to “new heights”.

Celebrity support

Among the celebrities in attendance – including Stevie Wonder and John Legend – Oprah Winfrey was the latest to support Ms Harris and warn against Mr Trump.

She said there are “people who want to divide first and conquer second” and who want to make others believe “that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe.”

“Clear” speech from Oprah

Quoting the late Congressman John Lewis, she added, “No matter what ship our ancestors arrived on, we are now in the same boat.”

“But he also knew that the work is not done,” she added. “The work will never be done, because freedom is not free.”

“Sometimes you have to stand up to the tyrants of life,” she said.

“Don’t count the lies”

Former President Bill Clinton also joined in the convention’s mockery of Trump, urging the audience to count the ‘I’s’ rather than the lies in his next speech.

“He’s like one of those tenors who, before they go on stage, open up and try to open their lungs, saying: Me, me, me, me.”

“When Kamala Harris is president, every day will start with you, you, you.”

He also mocked Trump’s repeated references to fictional murderer Hannibal Lector, joking that he makes “endless tributes.”

Project 2025, a set of policy proposals that some conservatives hope Trump will adopt, has also come under criticism.

Comedian Kenan Thompson brought the big strategy book onto the stage and told the audience: “Have you ever seen a document that can kill a small animal and democracy at the same time?

“Here it is.”
