BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police Dog Maverick and his master, Police Dog Officer Dan Rhoades, were recently called to assist in a traffic stop of a vehicle whose driver was suspected of consuming illegal drugs.

According to officers, Maverick immediately alerted the driver’s side of the vehicle. A subsequent search found drugs and paraphernalia in the car and the driver was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl and possession of drug paraphernalia.

“What the driver may not realize is that K-9 Maverick and the patrol officers on duty with Bravo Troop that night may have saved her life,” a Cocoa Police spokesperson said.

The 480 hours of training required for a patrol dog team is the longest of all patrol police disciplines.

This includes obedience control, arrest and search exercises. Additional training includes tracking work. The focus of the dogs’ training is on positive reinforcement using a reward system. The dog is motivated to work for the handler’s praise, which is built up through extensive bonding exercises.

The success of the police dog team depends on the relationship between dog and handler. For the team to work, the dog must love, trust and respect the handler.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 73,000 Americans died from fentanyl last year, including nearly 8,000 in Florida alone.

“We are using this example as part of National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day,” said a Cocoa Police spokesman.

Across the country, law enforcement officials continue to seize millions of counterfeit prescription drugs containing the deadly fentanyl.

It is often mixed with other drugs like meth and cocaine. Be aware that one pill can kill! If you or a family member is struggling with addiction, there are resources available.
