A sequel to the classic RPG Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines was already in development with Paradox Interactive in October 2015 when Paradox bought World of Darkness Owner White WolfWorld of Darkness is the umbrella franchise that includes classic tabletop RPGs Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypseand other.
Around the same time as this purchase, Paradox Interactive commissioned Hardsuit Labs (Blacklight: Retribution) to develop Bloodlines 2as a sequel to the cult classic BloodlinesIt seems that Hardsuit himself proposed the game and worked seriously on the title for several years.
Public updates arrived incredibly slowly over the next few years, and a delay to the game was announced in 2019. In 2020, it was delayed again – a move that sparked major fears about its future.
In 2021, Paradox Interactive announced a major change for Bloodlines 2: It would no longer be developed by Hardsuit Labs, but would be handed over to a secret developer to continue production. At the time, that developer was not revealed, but it was later revealed to be The Chinese Room – the award-winning studio behind Everyone has gone to the Rapture, dear Esther, And The depth still awakens.
At the time of writing, the team is still developing the game with the support of Paradox Interactive.

Despite the uncertain release date of the game, The Chinese Room and Paradox Interactive have already revealed many details about what to expect from the Bloodlines 2 Story. As described, you play the game as Phyre, an elderly vampire who awakens from a centuries-long sleep to find a new world in disarray.
You can choose which clan your vampire is from (Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim or Ventrue, with two more options coming after launch) and you can also choose gender, skills, traits, appearance and clothing, all of which affect conversations and dialogue options.
As you play through a story filled with political drama and violence, you must ensure that Phyre adheres to the Masquerade (the code that governs vampire secrecy) while dealing with additional complications – like renegade vampires and a mysterious “voice” in her head that guides her actions.

A detailed look at the gameplay for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 has revealed familiar first-person adventure gameplay that puts players in the role of a custom-created vampire. In your role as Phyre, you must ensure that you don’t break the masquerade (whatever that means for your clan) and that you rein in your power.
You can have super strength and use special vampire powers in battle, depending on your skill set and clan. However, you must use these abilities well (either secretly in public or cautiously in battle) to ensure you don’t succumb to the wrath of your enemies. Under certain circumstances, you can also bite your opponents and drain their blood, unlocking new powers.
When you are not in combat, spend your time in Bloodlines 2 explore a dark world, engage in dialogue, and ensure that your relationships with other vampires and clan members remain positive. Do you have to play the original? VtM: Bloodlines?
The original Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines is considered one of the best RPGs of its time, offering a level of freedom of choice unmatched by its competitors. Although the game is now quite old (there are at least modern patches to fix some of its shortcomings), it remains an essential game.
For a basic answer – no, you should not have to play Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines to enjoy Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2. There are decades between the two games, and the upcoming sequel seems inspired from the world and mechanisms of the original, but without treading the same ground.
As with many sequels, there will likely be references to the original game that only those who have played it will understand, but Bloodlines 2 will probably seek a new experience.
