SEC announces tiebreaker rules for conference title game

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Southeastern Conference has announced its tiebreaker procedures for the 2024 conference title game in the SEC’s first season without divisions since 1991.

The 6-step process begins with the direct duels between the teams with the same number of points. It then continues with the records of the teams with the same number of points against common conference opponents.

The record against the best-ranked opponents of the common conference is the third process, the relegation in the conference table among the teams with the same number of points.

Next comes the cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents. Then the limited relative total point differential against all conference opponents is taken.

The metric compares a team’s point lead to the average point lead of an opponent. The tie is ultimately broken by a random drawing of the teams.

If there is a clear regular season champion but multiple teams are tied for second place, the regular season champion will be selected as the highest-ranked team in the championship game and will be the home team. The tiebreaker for the second-place teams will then be used to determine the visiting team.

If two teams are tied for first place at the end of the regular season, both will qualify for the final. Tiebreakers will then be used to determine home and away places.

Since 1991, the SEC has had two divisions, with each division winner advancing to the conference championship game. This season, the divisions were eliminated, Texas and Oklahoma were added, and the number of conference members is now 16.
