Connect with the Australian lifting industry at LiftEx Gold Coast

LiftEx Gold Coast will take place on 12 and 13 September 2024 at the Event Centre, Star Hotel on Australia’s Gold Coast. The major two-day exhibition and conference brings together lifting and height safety equipment suppliers with end users who operate, inspect and test lifting equipment in the mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, construction, ports and marine and renewable energy sectors.

LiftEx Gold Coast is completely free to attend and also includes coffee breaks, lunch and drinks and canapés at the drinks reception. This makes it the ideal event to network, socialise and engage with the Australian lifting industry and improve safe lifting practices. To attend, register at events.leeaint.com/liftex-gold-coast.

Speakers’ meetings

LiftEx has planned a programme of informative lecture sessions for both days of the event. Experts will provide insight into topics such as the development of AS4991 – Lifting Equipment, with expert opinions on how to further develop this ‘do-it-all’ standard, which has long been a controversial topic. Manufacturing companies will have the opportunity to acquire practical tools to increase diversity in their workplace, remain competitive and become market leaders.

After a welcome from Justin Boehm, LEEA’s Regional Manager for Australia and New Zealand, the speaking sessions begin with Teagan Dowler from the Queensland Government’s Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water speaking on ‘Women in Industry’. Next up is Tower Crane Training, with Warwick Bright presenting ‘Pre-Use Inspections for Riggers and Riggers’. This free training, offered through LEEA’s licensed training centre, is valued at over $600.

In the Queensland Government Code of Practice session, Stuart Davies from the Government’s Industrial Relations Office will explain how they are looking at ways to better protect workers through a potential change to the way concrete slabs are lifted. Delegates will be briefed on these changes and the impact on the lifting industry. The first day’s program will conclude with a panel discussion on ‘Standard Development and Industry Issues’ with Justin Boehm, Ashlea Johnson from Bunzl Safety and Stuart Edwards from Edwards Heavy Lift.

The second day of the lecture session begins with a panel discussion on the launch of the LEEA military training program. The MTS brings together qualified and experienced individuals transitioning from the military into civilian life and potential employment in the lifting industry.

Following this introduction, Matt Barber, Director of Membership at LEEA, will share the Association’s program updates and developments that will change the face of service delivery in the region.

Next up is a session entitled: “NOPSEMA – Safer and more sustainable offshore operations”. The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and environmental sustainability of offshore energy projects. As Australia’s offshore wind sector gains momentum, NOPSEMA will provide important insights for safer and more sustainable offshore operations.

The lecture sessions will conclude with a thought-provoking talk on the Beaconsfield Mine Disaster – what have we learned 18 years later? The talk will be given by Brant Webb, one of two miners to survive the tragic Beaconsfield Gold Mine collapse in 2006. His story of survival and resilience is nothing short of extraordinary. Brant and fellow miner Todd Russell were trapped one kilometre below the surface for two weeks after a third miner, Larry Knight, was killed in the mine collapse. Their condition was unknown for a full 5 days before rescuers found them alive. Brant’s experience has given him a unique perspective on safety, resilience and the human ability to persevere. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of safety protocols and procedures in high-risk environments.
