Randy Blythe from Lamb of God on his favorite Metallica album

Metallica fans have long debated which was the band’s best album: the one from 1986. Master of the Puppets often with a slight lead over 1984 Ride the lightning. For Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe, Ride the lightning gets his voice “all day long”.

In a recent interview with 96.7 KCAL-FM host Radioactive MikeZ, Blythe was asked to choose between Master of the Puppets And Ride the lightningThe frontman of Lamb of God quickly replied: “Ride the Lightning all day!”

Blythe continued (as transcribed by Blabbermouth): “I think Master of the Puppets overall it sounds better as a record, and they were better players back then. But I think Ride the lightning is wilder, especially the opening track, “Fight Fire With Fire,” which I think I played at the Dynamo Festival with Craig (Locicero) from Forbidden and a couple of other guys from the Bay Area. He was doing the Bay Area thrash attack thing.”

He added: “It is so aggressive, Ride the lightning; it is just so incredibly aggressive and sometimes breakneck, while I think maybe Master of the Puppets is — it’s kind of a classic album, more rounded, I think, but as far as my favorite album goes, it’s definitely Ride the lightning. And as far as aggressive, straight-ahead thrash, I think it’s more aggressive, dude. I just love it. I love that album to this day.”

The Lamb of God singer then mentioned one of his favorite bands, Bad Brains, as he further elaborated on the comparison between the two Metallica albums.

For me it is like the difference between the first Bad Brains record, the ROIR cassette and Me against me”, Blythe remarked.Me against me sounds better, it’s better mixed, they were better musicians back then, but the first Bad Brains album is so fast and wild… Ironically, I like Me against me better. I don’t know. It’s kind of the opposite thing. But it’s kind of the same. I just like the rawness of Ride the lightning. And there is no denying it.”

A few years ago, Blythe thanked Metallica frontman James Hetfield for helping him on his path to sobriety. “James is a cool guy,” the singer said I don’t ask anyone with Kevin Re LoVullo“I got sober on a Metallica tour in Australia. And let me just say that James Hetfield helped me a lot.”

Lamb of God still have a few dates left on their co-headlining tour “Ashes of Leviathan Tour” with Mastodon. Tickets are available here.
