“EVERYONE STAY AWAY”: Fallen tree over the Cuyahoga River creates “drowning hazard”

“EVERYONE STAY AWAY”: Fallen tree over the Cuyahoga River creates “drowning hazard”

KENT, Ohio (WOIO) – The Kent Fire Department has warned the public to stay away from the Cuyahoga River because a fallen tree that fell across the Cuyahoga River poses “a serious drowning and escape hazard.”

A sieve was described by KFD as a solid object that allows water to pass through but retains solids.

“This condition has led to drowning accidents in the past and remains the greatest danger on most rivers,” KFD said.

The tree was discovered by a kayaker upstream of the Haymaker Bridge, KFD said.

According to KFD, the city of Kent plans to remove the tree Thursday morning.

According to KFD, damage control related to the tree requires cooperation from the fire department’s water rescue team, the service department and the parks and recreation department, which are also working with experts from the Davey Tree Company.

“All of these agencies have trained intensively together in the past to learn how to manage these natural hazards responsibly,” KFD explained. “Wood debris in the river is an essential part of our river’s ecosystem. We understand and respect this fact while ensuring safe passage for those who use our river for recreation.”

KFD has shared these safety tips:

  • Explore the river before planning your paddling trip
  • Adjust your route or postpone your trip if you detect a danger
  • Call KFD at 330-673-8814 if you notice a hazard
  • Wear a life jacket while on the water (attached to your kayak is NOT good enough)
  • Never go on or to the river alone – use the buddy system
  • Share your plan with someone else and set a time to check in.
  • Instruct your check-in person to call the fire department if they do not hear from you in time
